SHARE, REPAIR, REUSE.

Banff’s goal is to divert 70% of waste from landfill by 2028 and send zero waste to landfill by 2050. The Town of Banff is working to eliminate waste sources, while supporting and growing our local share, repair, and reuse economy.

Wondering how we actually get to zero landfill waste? We become a circular community!

The Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA) is helping Alberta communities to explore and support the Circular Cities concept, working with them to create roadmaps for a sustainable circular economy.

Read more about Banff’s roadmap here.

With ongoing support from the RCA, the Town of Banff has launched several share, repair, and reuse related programs in 2021 and 2022 to ultimately grow Banff’s circular economy.

Simply put, a ‘circular economy’ is one where we generate less waste, reuse resources over and over again, and regenerate natural systems. We keep materials in circulation by using only what we need, repairing and sharing what we have, repurposing goods to keep the lifecycle circulating with no end, and explore more circular opportunities.

See below for examples of our ongoing share, repair, and reuse initiatives:

Banff Re-Use It Centre

The Town of Banff Re-Use It Centre is a free store where residents can pick up new treasures to bring home at no cost! Such as books, toys, dishes, furniture and more. The Re-Use It Centre keeps materials out of the landfill and useful goods circulating in our community.

The Town of Banff Re-Use It Centre is open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., seven days a week.

The Re-Use It Centre is located at the Waste Transfer Site, 160 Hawk Avenue, in the Industrial District.

Residents are also able to drop off previously used household items in good condition at the Re-Use It Centre.

Visit banff.ca/Reuse for more information on what is accepted and what is not accepted at the Re-Use It Centre.

Library of Things

Based on significant interest expressed in a survey of residents conducted by the Town of Banff, the Town and the Banff Public Library have partnered to pilot an equipment lending program. The Library of Things opened in October 2021.

Banff and Lake Louise residents can borrow a variety of items that are rarely used, hard to store, or are expensive, such as tools, cooking appliances and hobby items. It is free to access — all you need is a valid Banff Public Library membership. The Library of Things can be accessed at the Banff Public Library seven days a week during regular library hours.

The Library of Things will help reduce community-wide waste and consumption, and contribute to social inclusion, accessibility, and affordability for members of the community.

The initiative could be expanded in the future with community programming such as training workshops, repair/ fix-it sessions, community events (sewing tutorials, vehicle maintenance workshops) and more.
